I approached Neil to assist us in the HR team to cover an interim period whilst my deputy was away for a period of time. I have been delighted with the interim cover Neil provided in helping to manage the HR Services team; as well as picking up a number of pieces of project work in respect of our People Strategy Action plan. Neil was able to quickly understand the culture and ways of working both within HR and across Birkbeck. He has provided me with highly effective support in a range of areas and has been perceptive in being able to put forward new and alternative suggestions around the way we approach issues. The development of our internal project concerning organisation and management of our academic courses reached the stage where the recommendations relating to roles and structures needed to be implemented. As this was a significant people focused change activity we brought Neil into the team to lead the delivery of this implementation. His HR knowledge, experience, people skills and ability to remain unflappable in the face of conflicting pressures and priorities were invaluable. Neil worked autonomously for the duration of implementation and was the driving force behind bringing in consistent structures and roles across the University. Neil was professional, pragmatic and delivered the required objectives of his brief.
